A message of warning for the subject of complacency needs to be shared as of late. We must arouse to the call of God, and finish this work He has for each one of us. The gospel must be preached! Hebrews 10:38 “Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.“ Luke 9:62 “And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

Definition: A feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, especially when coupled with an unawareness of danger, trouble, or controversy – a feeling of contented self-satisfaction, especially when unaware of upcoming trouble.
Revelation 3:15 “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.”
Luke 10:2 “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”
A clear and present danger within the household of God is the complacency of His people. The temptation to sit back and slack in the work He would have us do can lead to destruction in the end. When complacency takes root in the heart, then the commands of God go unheeded. The understanding becomes darkened, and His commands are treated more like mere suggestions.
Amos 8:11 “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:”
Make no mistake, brothers and sisters, this famine can and will strike unbelievers as well as believers who have allowed complacency to take root. This in turn leads them into slumber, a spiritual sleep because they cannot discern the times in which we live. Nor are they able to discern the deceptions of Satan and the urgency of needing to get right with the Lord before it’s too late. The enemy of souls has tempted many into becoming sleepy virgins who are unwilling to perform the work of God on a daily basis.
Matthew 25:1-13 “Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.”
Mark 13:34-37 “For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.”
We are all called to be watchmen who are continually observant, always watching. As watchmen on the wall, there is a passionate fire within, a sense of urgency, a deep seated compulsion to get out there and bring people to the Lord that they may be saved. But the sleepiness of complacency has turned many a precious soul away from their duties to watch, observe, and warn the world of what is coming. We are living in the end times, and the close of human history will be upon all of mankind in the soon to come future. As such, the work MUST press forward in an ever-increasing manner.
In daily life, this work must continue and increase. Even in conversation, complacency can take root when irrelevant communication is used.
Ephesians 4:29 “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
Colossians 3:8 “But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth.”
No one can afford to become sluggards or slothful in the great work with which our Lord has entrusted to them. No longer can it be the case that the lion in streets prevents the dear soul from pressing forward.
Proverbs 22:13 “The slothful man saith, There is a lion without, I shall be slain in the streets.”
Proverbs 21:25-26 “The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour. He coveteth greedily all the day long: but the righteous giveth and spareth not.”
The long-awaited great day of the return of our King is fast approaching … and the enemy wants to rob us of the eternal reward our Lord promised. As soldiers for Christ, none of us can allow ourselves to drop our guards at any time. Nor can any of us afford to lower any piece of the Armor of God … most especially the sword with which we fight, the Word of God.
Zephaniah 1:14 “The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.”
Deuteronomy 8:11-14 “Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;”
Accumulating too much in this world can cause people to forget they need God. Comfort and convenience tend to be detrimental to faith, but not always. The greatest of faith and trust tend to be found in those who grew up poor and lacking. More than that, however, the greatest of faith and trust tend to be found in those who are lacking in life currently.
Receiving much in life is not a bad thing when it is tempered with the heartfelt conviction that these conveniences are for the sake of others as well as the self. We are but shepherds and caretakers of the Lord’s goods. As such, all things in life are to be used for the furtherance of our Lord’s will. Whether it be money, food, house, car, or health, all things belong to Him and are there for His purposes. When He chooses to increase someone, they ought to pray, “Father, how may I use these blessings to glorify you? Teach me, Father, how these things can be used to bring more souls to Christ.”
2 Chronicles 20:32-33 “And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD. Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers.”
People can become so accustomed to doing evil that it’s the comfortable way to live. There have been countless souls the Lord has sent my way who well accept the Truth presented to them, but they become paralyzed in their walk because they have become so accustomed to the traditions they have learned over a lifetime … like with Sunday keeping.
The heart is prepared to walk with the Lord when it becomes submitted and it truly make Jesus Christ the Lord of their life. When the old man is finally killed on the cross of Christ, it is then prepared and ready to follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth. From there, all obstacles which led to complacency will be overcome. When Jesus is held high above all other people and things, it becomes simple to follow Him. Breaking from tradition and opinion is a trivial thing when the truth of God’s Word is well-beloved in the converted heart.
Psalm 10:4 “The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.”
Pride can have people focusing on thoughts that don’t serve God. But in stark contrast, you witness the heart of the converted. The Lord has led all of us to focus so completely, so entirely, so single-mindedly upon His Word that all other thoughts pale in comparison. He has taught us to not just READ His Word, but to LIVE in His Word.
He has revealed to us the truth that Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh. Because He loved us first and has made our previously stony hearts into hearts of flesh, we embrace and truly love the Bible because we have been blessed with the heartfelt understanding that to stay in the Bible is to grow closer to our Saviour. Our every affection, our every desire is rooted in the love we have toward Him. As such, God is in every thought of those who have been shaped in His love.
Proverbs 1:32 “For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.”
To turn away from God as a fool does and to have false security in complacency will lead to destruction. There are those dear souls who continue to believe that worldly prosperity will somehow bring them to a place of security from the wrath of God which is soon to come.
In another sense, there are those who believe that rooting their spiritual lives in false religions will still gain them eternal life in Heaven. But our Father has taught His children that their riches are in Heaven, even if their worldly riches are lacking. He has taught us that it is immeasurably more important to prosper in His ways than it is to prosper in the enemy’s ways.
Proverbs 10:4 “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”
Slack – deceit, treachery, and slothfulness (like those refusing to study His Word)
Diligent – strict decision
To be diligent in our dealings means to always go with God’s commands. Dealing with a slack hand is clearly evident when it comes to money. When the heart is not strictly focused upon what our Father wants His money to go toward, you witness slack hands purchasing things which do not serve His will, but rather, only serve the selfish self-interest of the individual.
A slack hand will also misuse the Bible. Though it may be read, the slack (or complacent) hand is not diligent in searching the Scriptures, like the Bereans of old.
Philippians 2:13 “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
God provides both the desire and the capability to serve Him. The diligent soul searches the Scriptures because of a true desire to not just know His will but understand how they may serve Him better.
Proverbs 22:9 “He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.”
Complacency can keep people from doing what is necessary. A diligent person always appreciates what they have. The Bread of Life is given to every soul the Holy Spirit sends our way. The complacent spirit does not see how bountifully the Lord has blessed them. The invigorating desire to share the Gospel and spread the present truth is not found in the complacent heart and MUST be ignited once again.
As it pertains to the verse we just read, look at what Jesus said …
Matthew 11:4-5 “Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see: The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.”
“… the poor have the gospel preached to them.” This same spirit resides in the heart of God’s children. As Jesus spread the Word to the poor, so too do His people. The soul that truly sees the importance of bringing others to Christ and warning them of the prophetic truth of the times in which we live, will go to seek those who need such beautiful truths.
Our despicable enemy cannot have this, however. To that end, he strives to place a complacent spirit in the people of God so that others may not have an opportunity to repent and be saved.
Proverbs 30:20 “Such is the way of an adulterous woman; she eateth, and wipeth her mouth, and saith, I have done no wickedness.”
Being complacent makes people self-deceived to the point that they think they do no wrong and just go about life carelessly. The adulterous woman, or unfaithful church, has been lured into the self-deceived trap where she believes she is faithfully following the Lord while simultaneously living in her sins and iniquities.
In our Proverbs 31 study where we looked deeply into the virtuous woman, we saw how it is said of her that …
Proverbs 31:12 “She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.”
By contrast, the adulterous woman sees no wrong in her unfaithfulness. She sees no requirement to repent because her self-deception has led her to believe she has done no wickedness. This shows that the unfaithful church has fallen into complacency because it means they see no wickedness in their disobedience.
How many of us can testify to the fact that though the evidence presented to the Sunday keeper is sound and airtight, the Sunday keeper still thinks there is no harm in keeping Sunday while rejecting Sabbath? I would venture to guess that nearly all of us have witnessed this first-hand.
The truth of Proverbs 30:20 can even be seen in a literal sense. There are those people who have committed adultery against their spouse and rather than fully owning up to their transgression, have spent an excessive amount of time making excuses for how their spouse bears responsibility for the sin. It usually sounds like this, “Yes, I committed adultery, but so-and-so did this and that and all the things they did are why I committed adultery.” This is a false repentance … especially in those cases where the adulterous spouse sees no reason to permanently break contact with the one they cheated with. Their spiritual complacency has led them into failing to see the danger in which they live.
You can also see the spiritual aspect of this corrupt mindset when a complacent church is given the truth of the error of their ways but keeps living in their unfaithful ways.
Isaiah 16:6 “We have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be so.”
Moab was a great example of pride and self-interest which led to complacency and destruction (v. 14 “But now the LORD hath spoken, saying, Within three years, as the years of an hireling, and the glory of Moab shall be contemned, with all that great multitude; and the remnant shall be very small and feeble.”)
Complacency and pride can be seen when self-interest supersedes other things. For example: when there is someone getting beat up, the majority of people will whip out their phones just to record what’s going on. Video after video shows how not a single soul has been willing to help their fellow man who man be in danger of losing their life.
The excuses are numerous and entirely fear-based. “If I help, I could get beat up.” “If I help, I could get killed.” “I can’t help, I don’t have any medical training.” “I could do more harm than good.” “The crowd might turn against me if I step in.” And so on and so forth. All these things are being scared of the lion in the streets.
Yes, there may be a chance that the one who helps will be caught up in the violence. But so what!? Is it not written …
John 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
And did not the one in whom we place our trust lead the way by His very example? Did not He willingly lay down His life for me and you? And in a most painful, humiliating, and gruesome way at that? So, since our Saviour gave His people this example, then why are so many afraid to follow in His footsteps?
Selfish self-interest is part of complacency. When complacency enters into the heart, the self takes precedence over others.
Isaiah 32:9 “Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear unto my speech.”
Becoming complacent leads to careless thoughts and behaviors. Behaviors which are harmful to the body, such as eating those things that have been strictly forbidden in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14, becomes commonplace in the complacent heart.
Carelessness in how the body is treated is not the only thing, however; but also, carelessness in one’s spiritual life becomes affected. The mishandling of the Lord’s Word is also committed. Complacency ensures that study is compromised. And living according to His Word dwindles away.
Obedience is no longer of utmost importance when complacency enters the heart. The church becomes at ease and behaves in a careless manner. To that end, obedience becomes grievous to them. The Lord our Saviour said that His people need to be going out and spreading the Gospel together with the present truth. Yet, how many are obeying His command?
Isaiah 43:22 “But thou hast not called upon me, O Jacob; but thou hast been weary of me, O Israel.”
When God tells people to wait or give up something, people can become weary and not call on Him. I believe that the majority of us can bear witness to knowing at least one person who gave up on their prayer lives because God was not answering quickly enough.
I know of one person. She openly declared that she stopped praying for patience because every time she did, her children would act up. Though she was told, she didn’t understand that her prayers were answered. Her children acting up immediately after her prayers for patience was just God testing her. Afterall, how can you know that you have been blessed with increased patience unless you are put into a situation where you have to use that patience?
Galatians 6:9 “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
Proverbs 24:10 “If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small.”
The tests, quite obviously, have been hitting all of God’s people hard and fast. These tests are designed to train us for the tasks ahead. Meet them with the sufficiency of grace that is found in Jesus Christ. Tiredness may come, and the temptation to quit may come, but rest assured, brothers and sisters, His strength to endure will be there. Reject the temptation to become complacent … refuse to fall into the trap that says doing well in the name of the Lord only leads to hardship. In the end, the reward will be eternal life with our Lord … a reward that far exceeds any and all hardships we face on this side of eternity.
Isaiah 47:8-9 “Therefore hear now this, thou that art given to pleasures, that dwellest carelessly, that sayest in thine heart, I am, and none else beside me; I shall not sit as a widow, neither shall I know the loss of children: But these two things shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, and for the great abundance of thine enchantments.”
Being given to pleasure and living carelessly brings people to not being observant of the reality around them. The entertainment and music industries are there to guide people away from reality. Falling into them comes from a complacent mindset. Looking toward distraction in order to steer away from what the Lord has said will come will only lead to destruction in the end.
Isaiah 64:7 “And there is none that calleth upon thy name, that stirreth up himself to take hold of thee: for thou hast hid thy face from us, and hast consumed us, because of our iniquities.”
Because of their own iniquities, people abandon God. Their complacency leads the way. In fact, it is due to iniquity and complacency that the mind becomes so twisted against God that they then blame Him for all their problems.
Daniel 9:13 “As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.”
The complacent heart does not seek God when evil strikes. It will seek its own way out; not realizing it brought evil in the first place.
Yes, our ever-loving Father does allow trials into our lives, but they are there for the holy purpose of guiding us into obedience and a closer walk with Jesus.
Psalm 119:67, 71, 75 “Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word. It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.”
Complacency is born from success. As we learned last Sabbath, having too much in life can and does lead to people abandoning the trust and faith they ought to have in God. So, in faithfulness, He sends trials to bring the wayward soul back to His side. As the little lamb that has wandered away needs its leg broken so that it may learn to completely rely upon its shepherd, so too do we need to be brought low through affliction to learn how to completely rely upon our Shepherd.
Jeremiah 6:14 “They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.”
Being complacent also means living in denial and not facing reality. Again, the industries of distraction have a huge part to play in this. Refusal to obey the Lord in everything from dress reform to evangelization leads to the complacent mindset that refuses to fully acknowledge that the end of human history and the return of Jesus Christ is just on the horizon.
When I say refusal to acknowledge these things, I’m speaking on an intellectual basis. Countless souls full well realize that the 2nd Coming is soon to arrive, but their complacency is evident by their works, or lack thereof. The temporary peace of the moment blurs the vision and motivation of many. As a consequence, the fire of faith within the heart dies and the work grows stagnant.
Brothers and sisters, this cannot be allowed. The work must not just exist, but increase as the times grow shorter. Our Lord has a mighty work in front of us and there are many precious souls who need to know the Truth. May the fire which was first kindled in each of us grow to the point that many others will come to know their Saviour and His loving warnings for all of mankind.
Haggai 1:2 “Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, This people say, The time is not come, the time that the LORD’S house should be built.”
Being in denial (especially about the times in which we live) is self-destructive.
Jeremiah 10:21 “For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.”
There are serious consequences for the complacent pastor. Brutish – to be stupid, dull-hearted, unreceptive (due to complacency).
The reason we don’t blame the person in the pews is because the fault lies upon their false pastors, teachers, and ministers. These men, who are supposed to be guiding their congregations toward the Light, have done little more than lead them to the precipice of destruction. Their own complacency in study and obedience has prevented them from knowing the Scriptures and the prophetic truth written therein.
Their complacency has led them to receiving the 501c3, preaching a false Jesus, keeping the traditions of man through holidays and Sunday keeping, and even to the extent of ordaining women to preach on the pulpit. In these modern times, many denominations have gone so far as to preach that homosexuality and transgenderism are not sins. These preachers have truly become the blind who are leading the blind.
Ezekiel 28:2 “Son of man, say unto the prince of Tyrus, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thine heart is lifted up, and thou hast said, I am a God, I sit in the seat of God, in the midst of the seas; yet thou art a man, and not God, though thou set thine heart as the heart of God:”
Complacency comes from not submitting to God’s authority. To be complacent makes people their own gods who follow their own ways. Does this mindset sound familiar? Concerning Satan, it is written …
Isaiah 14:13-14 “For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.”
And of the times in which we live, it is written …
Isaiah 4:1 “And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel: only let us be called by thy name, to take away our reproach.”
One does not have to be a ruler over people to believe they are better than someone else. From the highest to the lowest in society, this way of thinking has taken root.
Ezekiel 33:31 “And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.”
The self-deceived and disobedient believers still attend church and hear the Word … they just don’t act upon it.
Matthew 15:8 “This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.”
When the heart is fixed upon Jesus Christ, obedience in His name is the compulsion of the heart.
Hosea 7:7 “They are all hot as an oven, and have devoured their judges; all their kings are fallen: there is none among them that calleth unto me.”
The complacent heart does not want to hear of sin or its consequences.
1 Corinthians 6:2-3 “Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world? and if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? how much more things that pertain to this life?”
The fact of the matter is that, yes, God’s people are supposed to judge. But the world and modern Christianity declares, “Don’t judge”. The Lord led me to make a video all about judging which has blessed many to understand His will on this matter. What none of us are allowed to do is say whether someone is going to Heaven or hell … that is for God alone. That said, calling out sin provides the wayward soul the opportunity to repent and be saved. It is an act of love, not hatred, to hold someone accountable for their sins. And when we are rebuked for sin, it is an act of love as well.
Hosea 13:6 “According to their pasture, so were they filled; they were filled, and their heart was exalted; therefore have they forgotten me.”
Again, having too much has people forgetting that they need God. By the way, a person doesn’t have to be rich to develop this type of complacent mindset. I have known some desperately poor people who believe they don’t need the Lord. Being filled, as the prophet Hosea said, can also mean being full of self.
I saw a quote once that said, “If you’re not hungry for God, you’re probably full of yourself.”
Amos 6:1 “Woe to them that are at ease in Zion, and trust in the mountain of Samaria, which are named chief of the nations, to whom the house of Israel came!”
God says that those who are at ease are in trouble, those who trust in the protection of things also. Again, being at ease, as the prophet Amos said, has little to do with worldly wealth. Rather, it has to do with the complacent heart that has a feeling of contented self-satisfaction, especially when unaware of upcoming trouble.
Zephaniah 1:4-6 “I will also stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests; And them that worship the host of heaven upon the housetops; and them that worship and that swear by the LORD, and that swear by Malcham; And them that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor enquired for him.”
The Lord’s anger is kindled against all who turn away from Him (only complacency does this). Modern Christianity has combined Vatican paganism with Christianity and led many astray.
Zephaniah 1:12 “And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.”

Malachi 1:6-14 “A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name? Ye offer polluted bread upon mine altar; and ye say, Wherein have we polluted thee? In that ye say, The table of the LORD is contemptible. And if ye offer the blind for sacrifice, is it not evil? and if ye offer the lame and sick, is it not evil? offer it now unto thy governor; will he be pleased with thee, or accept thy person? saith the LORD of hosts. And now, I pray you, beseech God that he will be gracious unto us: this hath been by your means: will he regard your persons? saith the LORD of hosts. Who is there even among you that would shut the doors for nought? neither do ye kindle fire on mine altar for nought. I have no pleasure in you, saith the LORD of hosts, neither will I accept an offering at your hand. For from the rising of the sun even unto the going down of the same my name shall be great among the Gentiles; and in every place incense shall be offered unto my name, and a pure offering: for my name shall be great among the heathen, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye have profaned it, in that ye say, The table of the LORD is polluted; and the fruit thereof, even his meat, is contemptible. But cursed be the deceiver, which hath in his flock a male, and voweth, and sacrificeth unto the Lord a corrupt thing: for I am a great King, saith the LORD of hosts, and my name is dreadful among the heathen.”
We all want to be part of that blessed number. So, turn to the Lord in obedience and trust.
Proselytize – To attempt to convert someone to one’s own religious faith. To convert (a person) from one belief, doctrine, cause, or faith to another.

So, if even the Atheist’s are saying that Christians need to be going out there and letting our beliefs be known far and wide … then why are so many of them acting as sleepy virgins who do little to nothing to bring people to Christ?
