Modern Revivals: Is The ‘Asbury Revival’ From God?

Recently, across the nation, there has been religious “revivals” that have broken out. The most buzzing and popular one began at a small Methodist college called Asbury University. And another one in Brownsville, which is located at a Pentecostal church in Pensacola, Florida. In Asbury, it all started after a normal chapel service was given on February 8th. After the normal service, students wouldn’t leave and stayed and worshipped, prayed, and shared testimony’s. This is still going on as I write this article—non-stop. In fact, the ‘Asbury Revival’ is so widespread that the national news network, Fox News, covered a story on it. Here is what Fox had to say:

“An evangelical service in Wilmore, Kentucky has been celebrating nonstop for 10 days in what many of its participants are calling a “revival.”

“The event is being held at Asbury University — a small Christian college — and has seen participants fly in from across the country to participate as it enters its tenth straight day of worship.

“The movement began after students refused to leave following a chapel service last Wednesday, and the services have since grown to pack the school’s chapel with worshipers from all over the country, according to Christianity Today.”

People from all over the country have flown into Kentucky to experience this revival.

The Roy’s Report stated: “As word spread online, students from nearby universities, like the University of Kentucky, joined in worship and prayer, Presta said. Churchgoers also started gathering—not just from the Lexington area but also traveling from as far away as Michigan and South Carolina.

“Tim Beougher, pastor of West Broadway Baptist Church and a professor at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, told Kentucky Today that he was encouraged by what’s happening at Asbury. “We need to pray for the Lord’s protection on them,” he added. “When God said let us arise and build, Satan says let us arise and destroy.””

“As of Saturday afternoon, students remained in the chapel, singing, praying, reading Scripture, experiencing moments of stillness, and sharing personal testimonies. One student dragged a mattress from his dorm to the chapel floor to spend the night there, Presta said. Other people slept against the wall or went home to sleep and return later, she added. The university and volunteers have provided food and drinks in the auditorium basement at times.”

Asbury Collegian’s website, where Presta has posted daily updates on the revival, experienced so much traffic Saturday that it briefly crashed.”

“Asbury President Kevin Brown spoke about John 17 Friday night, a passage that calls for unity, Presta reported.”

“So when people see us, they see one accord,” Brown said. “For this generation, for the church, for the world, for the edification of our neighbor, and for the glory of God. This is not a Hughes Auditorium thing. This is not an Asbury thing. This is a kingdom thing.”

These movements have been labeled as “moves of God.” But is God really with these movements? What are the fruits? After all, we are called to test the spirits:

1 John 4:1 KJV
[1] Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

On the outside, this ‘revival’ seems holy, a thing of God, and an awakening. But let’s dive a little deeper.

One of many foul fruits; the ‘Asbury Revival’ is filled with people “speaking in tongues”, which in reality, is just gibberish. Actual Biblical tongues from the Holy Spirit grants someone with the ability to speak in another language as Acts 2 states.

Acts 2:4,6,8-11 KJV
[4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. [6] Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that EVERY MAN HEARD THEM SPEAK IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE. [8] And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? [9] Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, [10] Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, [11] Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them SPEAK IN OUR TONGUES the wonderful works of God. (See video below)

Photos of these “revivals” spreading across the country.

In fact, at Asbury, where this so called “revival” broke out; there were ‘LGBTQ+ worship singers’ leading service for 8 days straight! It would be a another thing, and encouraging, if those who identify as LGBTQ+ came to this ‘revival’ and repented of this lifestyle, and for identifying as being ‘LGBTQ+’. But rather, they are proud of this, that they were leading the worship; which is very alarming and telling in itself.

In the late 1800s, it was actually prophesied these so called ‘revivals’ would break out very near the end of time:

Popular revivals are too often carried by appeals to the imagination, by exciting the emotions, by pandering to the love for what is new and startling. Converts thus gained have no more desire to listen to Bible truths, no more interest in the testimony of prophets and apostles, than has the novel-reader. Unless a religious service has something of a sensational character, it has no attractions for them. A message which appeals, to unimpassioned reason, awakens no response. The plain warnings of God’s word, relating directly to their eternal interests, fall as upop the ears of the dead.” {SOP 4 294.1}

These revivals are carried by emotion and religious excitement, not by the work of the Spirit of God.

“The converts are not renewed in heart or changed in character. They do not renounce their pride and love of the world. They are no more willing to deny self, to take up the cross, and follow the meek and lowly Jesus, than before their conversion. In a genuine revival, when the Spirit of God convicts the conscience, the earnest, anxious inquiry will be heard, “What must I do to be saved?” And this not merely for a day. With every truly converted soul the relation to God and to eternal things will be the great topic of life. But where, in the popular churches of to-day, is the deep conviction of sin? where is the spirit of consecration to God? The spirit that controls the world rules in the church. Religion has become the sport of infidels and skeptics because so many who bear its name are ignorant of its principles. The power of godliness has well-nigh departed from the churches. Heart union with Christ is a rare thing now. The majority of church-members know no tie but that which joins them to an organized body of professed Christians. Love of pleasure and thirst for excitement are everywhere prevalent. Picnics, church theatricals, church fairs, fine houses, personal display, have banished thoughts of God. Lands and goods and worldly occupations engross the mind, and things of eternal interest re- ceive hardly a passing notice.” {SOP 4 294.2}

“Pleasure-lovers may have their names upon the church-records, they might stand high as worldly-wise men; but they have no connection with Christ of Calvary. The apostle Paul describes a class who are “lovers of pleasures more than lovers of’ God; having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” Concerning them he says, “From such turn away.” 1 Be not deceived by them, do not imitate their practices.” {SOP 4 295.1}

Like I stated earlier in my disclaimer, there are honest worshippers that are a part of these “revivals.” However, whether they know it or not, satan causes these sorts of stirs or “revivals” in the churches to make the people believe that God is doing a move in the church, and that He is still with the popular churches and Christian colleges. Before the time comes for the loud cry to go forth—which will warn all of the judgements that are to come upon the churches of the day, and that obedient Christian need to remove themselves from these apostate churches—Satan will stir these churches and make it seem as if God is working in the churches, so as to deceive them to stay within.

“Notwithstanding the wide-spread declension of faith and piety in the churches, the Lord still has honest children among them; and before his judgments shall be visited upon the earth, many minister’s and lay-members will separate from these bodies, and gladly receive the special truths for this time. The enemy of souls desires to hinder this work, and before the time shall come for such a movement, he will arouse what appears to be great religious intereet in the churches. They will exult that God is working
marvelously for them, when the work is that of another spirit; Under a religious guise, Satan will spread his influence over the land. He hopes to deceive many by leading them to think that God is etill with tho churches.
{SOP 4 295.2}

Friends, this is what we are seeing.

2 Corinthians 11:3-4 KJV
[3] But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. [4] For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

These revivals are completely void of obedience to God’s holy law. Void of deep conviction of sin. This revival is also full of “speaking in tongues”, which is just gibberish. This event also supports false New Apostolic Reformation Teachers, beliefs, and doctrines. But many other main fruits is this: they teach, believe, and preach false doctrines like the false Sunday-sabbath, immortality of the soul, eternal life in hellfire, the secret rapture, that obedience to God’s law is not a requirement, and the list could go on. Please do not be deceived brothers and sisters!

The excitement manifested is well adapted to mislead the unwary; yet none need be deceived. ln the light of God’s word it is not difficult to determine the nature of these religious movements. The history of God’s dealings with his people in the past testifies that his Spirit is not poured out upon those who neglect or oppose the warnings sent thorn by his servants. And by the rule which Christ himself has given, “Ye shall know them by their fruits,” it is evident that these move- ments are not the work of the Spirit of God.” {SOP 4 296.1}

Isaiah 8:20 KJV
[20] To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.”

If these precious souls heed the warnings of Gods precious Word, and “Come out of her my people..”, then this truly is the work and move of God! If Christian’s want a move of God, if Christian’s want and are desperate for a revival; take heed to what God has already said in His Word!

The loud cry will arouse millions to leave their fallen churches (which the Bible calls Babylon), to leave their associates, associations, government run churches, and follow Christ in truth!

Revelation 18:1-5 KJV
[1] And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory. [2] And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great IS FALLEN, IS FALLEN, and is BECOME the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. [3] For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies. [4] And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues. [5] For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.

Disclaimer: While there are most certainly true, honest in heart believers, and worshippers at these “revivals”; these modern revivals are not a move of God. These true in heart believers will be called out of these churches and movements in the loud cry. It is not my business to know the hearts of all in attendance at these awakenings or revivals. Rather, my goal is to point out the fruits, and the bigger picture of these events, not individual hearts. Who can know the heart apart from God?
